"A Poetics of Natural Light" by Peter Warshall, Summer Writing Program, 1996

Peter Warshall lectures on a poetics of natural light. Warshall explains light and sight from a biologist's standpoint, showing how they are part of a several billion year process of evolution. He explicates the connections between survival and elements of light perception, including contrast, concealment, and color. Warshall sees art as a development of the uses of these elements in the animal kingdom, and relates the artist's and poet's search for beauty to that of the naturalist.
